Ravens Rugby is proud to host a flag (non-contact) rugby camp designed for young athletes from Kindergarten to Grade 8, offering the perfect introduction to rugby without the intensity of full-contact play. Whether you're new to the sport or looking to develop your skills, this camp at Jericho Rugby Field is the perfect place to start your rugby journey!

What to expect

At our one-day or half-day camp on October 25th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, players will enjoy an engaging mix of drills, games, and activities that teach the essential techniques and tactics of rugby. Our experienced Ravens Rugby coaches focus on fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and confidence, all while keeping safety at the forefront of every activity.

 

Through fun exercises, participants will learn:

  • Basic Rugby Skills: Passing, catching, running with the ball, and defending.

  • Game Tactics: Understanding the flow of the game, positioning, and strategy.

  • Teamwork & Communication: Rugby is all about working together, and our camp encourages cooperation and communication on the field.

Who Can Join?

Our non-contact rugby camp is open to boys and girls in Grades K to 8. Whether you're an experienced player or trying rugby for the first time, we welcome all skill levels. The camp is a great way to stay active, make new friends, and develop a love for the sport. Players who can only attend part of the day are more than welcome as well.

Camp Agenda:

6-Hour Non-Contact Rugby Camp Schedule (Grades K to 2)

09:00 - 09:15 | Welcome & Warm-up
  • Introductions, fun ice-breaker activity to get to know each other.

  • Simple warm-up exercises like running, skipping, and jumping.

  • Light stretching and basic ball-handling exercises (e.g., passing the ball while standing in a circle).

09:15 - 10:00 | Skills Session 1: Passing & Catching
  • Fun games that encourage passing and catching (e.g., "Hot Potato" with the rugby ball).

  • Simple drills for practicing catching and passing in pairs or small groups.

  • Relay races with the ball to develop hand-eye coordination.

10:00 - 10:15 | Break & Snack
  • Water break.

  • Healthy snacks (fruit, crackers).

10:15 - 11:00 | Skills Session 2: Running & Evasion
  • Basic running drills: running in straight lines, around cones, and stopping quickly.

  • Games that encourage dodging and changing direction (e.g., tag games or "Sharks and Minnows").

  • Focus on fun rather than technique at this age, using lots of encouragement.

11:00 - 11:45 | Game Time: Non-Contact Rugby Games
  • Introduction to simple, non-contact versions of rugby (e.g., tag rugby or touch rugby).

  • Small-sided games where players focus on teamwork, passing, and running with the ball.

  • Celebrate participation and teamwork, keeping the atmosphere light and enjoyable.

11:45 - 12:45 | Lunch & Rest
  • Lunch break.

  • Quiet time or storytelling session after eating.

12:45 - 1:15 | Skills Session 3: Kicking & Fun Challenges
  • Basic kicking practice: gently kicking the ball to a partner or into a marked area.

  • Fun kicking games (e.g., kicking the ball through a target or into a hoop).

  • Use soft balls and focus on developing confidence with kicking.

1:15 - 1:30 | Break & Snack
  • Quick water and snack break.

1:30 - 2:00 | Team Play: Fun Team Games
  • Simple team games like "Rugby Obstacle Course" where children navigate through cones or mini challenges while holding the ball.

  • Focus on working together, cheering for teammates, and having fun.

2:00 - 2:45 | Free Play & Creativity
  • Children choose from a variety of fun rugby-related activities (e.g., ball painting, rugby-themed crafts, or mini games).

  • Encouraging creativity and social interaction.

2:45 - 3:00 | Cool Down & Reflection
  • Stretching and relaxing after an active day.

  • Group discussion about what they enjoyed the most, share something they learned, and celebrate everyone’s efforts.

  • Hand out any participation awards or fun prizes.

  • Engagement: The schedule is designed to keep the young players engaged through a mix of activities, emphasizing fun and positive reinforcement.

  • Breaks & Rest: Frequent breaks are incorporated to match the energy levels of younger children, and the schedule allows for rest and social time.

  • Simplicity: Activities are kept simple and age-appropriate, focusing on introducing basic rugby concepts in a fun and non-competitive way.

This structure helps younger children build a love for rugby while staying safe and engaged in a non-contact environment.

6-Hour Non-Contact Rugby Camp Schedule (Grades 3 to 8)

Grades will run separately as numbers allow. Expected groups are: Grades 3-4; Grades 5-6; and Grades 7-8.
 
09:00 - 09:15 | Welcome & Warm-up
  • Introduction and overview of the day's activities.

  • Dynamic warm-up: jogging, high knees, butt kicks, and lateral shuffles.

  • Rugby-specific mobility drills and ball-handling warm-up (passing in pairs or small groups while moving).

09:15 - 10:00 | Skills Session 1: Passing & Catching
  • Advanced passing techniques (lateral and spin passes).

  • Catching drills that focus on catching while moving and under mild pressure.

  • Small-group passing games, like "pass and move" or keep-away, emphasizing quick decision-making and teamwork.

10:00 - 10:15 | Break & Snack
  • Water break.

  • Light snacks (fruit, granola bars).

10:15 - 11:00 | Skills Session 2: Running & Evasion
  • Evasion drills: side-stepping, swerving, and acceleration/deceleration.

  • Agility drills with cones and ladders focusing on footwork and quick changes of direction.

  • Tag rugby drills to reinforce non-contact evasion skills in a fun, competitive environment.

11:00 - 12:00 | Game Simulation: Touch Rugby Games
  • Non-contact touch rugby games (5 vs. 5 or 7 vs. 7).

  • Focus on applying skills learned in earlier sessions, such as passing, catching, evasion, and communication.

  • Introduce simple team strategies and positioning (offense and defense).

12:00 - 1:00 | Lunch & Rest
  • Lunch break.

  • Encourage hydration and proper nutrition.

  • Quiet time or light team-building activities during rest.

1:00 - 1:45 | Skills Session 3: Kicking & Strategic Play
  • Kicking practice: punt, grubber, and drop kicks.

  • Kicking accuracy games: kicking to targets, distance kicking.

  • Basic introduction to strategic kicking during play (e.g., kicking for space or to restart play).

1:45 - 2:00 | Break & Snack
  • Quick water and snack break.

2:00 - 2:45 | Team Play: Game Scenarios & Strategy
  • Focus on team play in structured touch rugby games with specific objectives (e.g., maintaining possession, attacking in phases).

  • Introduce basic non-contact set-piece play (e.g., lineouts without lifting, structured restarts).

  • Develop teamwork and communication through more complex game simulations.

2:45 - 3:00 | Cool Down & Reflection
  • Gentle stretching and cooldown activities.

  • Group reflection on key learnings, what went well, and areas for improvement.

  • Encourage sportsmanship and teamwork, and celebrate effort and participation.

Notes:
  • Progressive Skill Development: This schedule is designed to help players build more advanced skills while staying engaged and having fun. The emphasis is on non-contact versions of rugby while still teaching core concepts and strategies.

  • Game Play: More time is allocated to game simulations and scenarios, helping players understand team dynamics and strategy in a non-contact setting.

  • Breaks & Rest: Regular breaks are scheduled to maintain energy and focus, especially important for grades 3 to 8.

This schedule allows players to develop their rugby skills in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment while introducing more complex elements of the game appropriate for grades 3 to 8.
